Department of Chemistry

Chemistry Department is one of the departments in the College of Natural and Computational Science of MWU. Since its establishment, 1999 E.C/2008 G.C, department of Chemistry offers B.Sc. degree courses in the regular and summer-in-service programs. Recently, the department has also launched post graduate program based on the demand of the Ministry of Education and the Society to produce skilled man powers who can meet the requirements of the country in general and the society in particular.

Chemistry is a fundamental field of study that plays a vital role in the development of science, technology, business and other related sciences. It strongly influences the socio-economic development of a society and civilization. Thus, it is very important that students be equipped with strong chemical knowledge and skills which enable them to be productive in areas where such knowledge and skills are required. Various sectors like; Research centers, Universities, Colleges, Preparatory schools, Industries and the like; where chemical knowledge and skills are required, demand such highly trained man powers.

Nowadays, the Ethiopian government is emphasizing on the expansion and strengthening of higher education in both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. As a result of this, many universities were established and also many preparatory schools and factories have been established in the past few years. Hence, it is to meet this increasing demand for skilled man power that the department has put in its strategic plan to launch programs of different modalities at undergraduate and post graduate scales.

Currently, the department has 4 Ethiopian PhD holders in Analytical and Organic Chemistry and one PhD candidate in Physical chemistry. One Ethiopian staff member with M.Sc. Degree in Inorganic Chemistry had the rank of Assistant professor. Moreover, there are 9 staff members having M.Sc. degrees and 1 staff member on study leave for M.Sc. degree. This piece of information reveals that the improvement of staff profile and their capacity to run the programs. Moreover, the department is striving to equip laboratories with necessary materials to provide genuine services for researchers and undergraduate as well as postgraduate students.

Main duties of the department

  • Training and equipping Undergraduate and post graduate students with the necessary knowledge, attitude and skills
  • Solving problems of the society through integrated research based activities
  • Participating in Community services

Message from the Department Head

For education to be functional and life simplifier the education system should lay on the strong education system that creates well trained man power that can accurately suggest a solution for the problem of the society. This in turn lays on the strong foundation of science, engineering, and mathematics that is used as a bridge to transform the people’s life from the level of poverty to the level of prosperity. In particular, mathematics is the core for contemporary civilization. Its contribution is abundant to segregate the world from the age of darkness to age of lightest and information era. It is also helped scientists being as a mirror to see and capture the distant that was perceived earlier as untouched, and unreached. Besides, as water is important for life to continue, mathematics is important for the progress of the world in science and in technology to continue. In fact mathematics helps to create well equipped 21st century generation that can confront and overcome different challenges in life. It helps in the dynamic world to develop the courage to improve the existing science and technology discoveries.

In addition, mathematics simultaneously teaches us union and working together. Different numbers positive, negative, and zero united to build a complex number system.  From this one can learn that human beings in different situations can unit and work together being as one complex society. Indeed, as mathematics is a common course starting from the early stage at nursery school, it creates opportunities so that different individuals to come to a table to discuss on the concepts of mathematics, and then other social issues. In this case mathematics also helps to create friendship.

So, it is pleasurable to come to the Mathematics Department Website at Madda Walabu University that communicates valuable information regarding the overall activities within the Department.  The Department of Mathematics is now efficiently functioning having 26 instructors: one Associate Professor, three Assistant Professor (Ph.D), nine Assistant professor (MSc) twelve lecturers and one graduate assistant who is attending 2nd degree education at present. In deeded, currently there are two PhD candidates.

The goal of mathematics department is to train qualified, adaptable, motivated, and responsible mathematicians who will contribute to the scientific and technological development of Ethiopia. We achieve this goal through outreach and diverse course offerings, small class size, dedicated teachers and working collaboratively as team being supported by reform tools. Our curriculum combines high-quality scientific training with a strong liberal arts component. The small size of our department allows our department to work with students one-on-one to meet their individual needs and interests, which is often difficult to find at larger institutions. Students are encouraged to get involved in research within the department as early as possible.

Dr. Tesfu Belachew Dadi (Associate Professor)

Head of Mathematics Department

Overview

With the fast advancement in the development of industry, agriculture, and service sectors, knotted with rapid population detonation and urbanization in Ethiopia, the country is facing remarkable challenges of environmental degradation and pollution. In respect of the global major environmental problems, the same ever-mounting glitches in Ethiopia, and the significance of environmental science, technology, and innovation to the sustainable development needs of the country, a multi-disciplinary M.Sc. Degree Program in Environmental Science was established in 2013/14GC in the then School of Natural Science.  Environmental science with its multidisciplinary nature and holistic approach focuses on conservation and management aspects that help for the survival of life on earth by understanding and tackling various problems that deteriorate the quality of the environment. Understanding Environmental Science is becoming ever more necessary for every person and it is the responsibility of all to protect and restore the quality of our environment by using scientific knowledge. Besides, Environmental Science integrates different disciplinary sciences to generate and apply new knowledge and innovations to nurture the quality of the environment and ensure the sustainable use of resources. Moreover, the Environmental Science program thus prepares students not only to care for the environmental resources but also to serve the people whose well-being depends on these resources and provides an opportunity for students interested in managing society’s impacts on the environment and how to manage it for long-lasting benefit. It is in response to these needs that the M.Sc. training Program is followed by the undergraduate program which was launched in 2015/16 GC under the College of Natural and Computational Science. The Department of Environmental science becomes one of the most active among the seven departments under the College of Natural and Computational Science. The M.Sc. program has served its purpose of training and producing the necessary skilled professionals in environmental science.  More than 79 M.Sc. and 155 undergraduate students graduated over the last 9 years.

Mission and Vision

Mission

The mission of the Environmental Science department is to advance the understanding of the environment and sustainability through the development of interdisciplinary research, education, and outreach programs by producing competent graduates, providing need-based community services, producing problem-solving research outputs, and playing a pivotal role in technology creation and transfer through innovative and creative education, research, and consultancy services to foster social and economic development of Ethiopia.

Vision

The vision of the Environmental Science department is to provide an excellent education in environmental sciences that produces knowledgeable and skilled experts accompanied by facilitating cutting-edge research focused on solving environmental issues with the aspires of Madda Walabau University to be one of the top five societal problem-solving universities in the country by 2025.
Future Plan

The department established a well-equipped computer lab and worked to establish a well-equipped Environmental Science Laboratory and GIS lab.  The department is working to take location advantages and excel center of excellence in Environmental science in the Southeastern part of the country.
