Message from the Department Head

It  is a pleasure to welcome to the website of the Department of Mathematics at Madda Walabu University that communicates valuable information about the teaching learning activities within the department. Mathematics is a fundamental field of study that plays a pivotal role in the development of science, technology, business, and computer science. It profoundly influences the socio-economic development of a society and civilization. Thus, it is imperative that students be equipped with strong Mathematical knowledge and skills which enable them to be productive in areas where rigorous thought and precision of results are emphasized and to be entrepreneur. The Department of mathematics is now efficiently functioning having 25 instructors: 1 Associate Professor,1 Assistant Professor(Ph.D), 21 Lecturers(M.Sc/M.Ed) and 2 pursing research in Ph.D in different universities.

Our goal is to educate the next generation of scientists and engineers, and to advance scientific knowledge. We achieve this goal through outreach and diverse course offerings, small class size, dedicate teachers and working collaboratively being supported by reform tools. Our curriculum combines high-quality scientific training with a strong liberal arts component. The small size of our department allows our department to work with students one-on-one to meet their individual needs and interests, which is often difficult to find at larger institutions. Students are encouraged to get involved in research within the department as early as possible.

About the Department

Department of Mathematics is one of the six departments in the college of natural and computational science of Madda Walabu University. The Department was established in the year 1999 E.C during the commencement of Madda walabu University with few staff members. Initially the department was offering bachelors of education in Mathematics (BEd) for both regular and Extension undergraduate programs up to 2001 E.C, where by the structure of curriculum was changed from BEd into B.Sc in Mathematics. So far the department has been graduating 8 batches which hope fully contributed to fill the mathematics professional gabs of the country.

At present, the Department is planning to offer M.Sc in Mathematics in the summer program for preparatory school teachers with the intension of starting in the regular program by next year. There are twenty three staff members on duty and two full study leave in the department, and all are sincerely involved in teaching, community services and research activities. The department fully implemented nationally harmonized modular curriculum and continuous assessment as per the rules and regulations of the university.

1. Objectives

1.1 General objectives

  • To train qualified, adaptable, motivated, and responsible Mathematicians who will contribute to the scientific and technological development of Ethiopia.
  • To impact knowledge by teaching.
  • To advance knowledge by research.

1.2 Specific objectives

  • To provide an in-depth understanding of the fundamental principles and techniques of Mathematics.
  •  To develop Mathematical thinking, reasoning and an appreciation of Mathematics as a primary language of science.
  • To develop the Mathematical skills needed in modeling and solving practical problems.
  • To prepare students for graduate studies in Mathematics and related fields.
  • Participate in professional activities.
  • Assist in teaching material preparation.
  • To produce graduates in Mathematics that are adaptable to teach in secondary schools, colleges,   universities and work in industries, research institutes etc.

2.1 Professional Profile

A BSc graduate in mathematics can

·         Contribute for the development of  science and technology,

·         model physical problems,

·         apply the acquired knowledge and skills to solve real life problem,

·         assist and conduct research.

·         teach in secondary schools, colleges and assists in Universities (through short/ long term pedagogical training). 

·         participate in mathematics curriculum development and teaching material preparation.

·         develop effective communication skills and ethical responsibility with the appreciation of cultural diversity,

·         create job opportunities by applying the acquired knowledge and skills.

·         Involve in different activities and responsibilities where rigorous thoughts, logical reasoning, simplification, precision and decision making skills are required.

2.2 Graduate Profile

A BSc graduate of this program is expected to:

—  acquire adequate Mathematical knowledge to teach in secondary schools, colleges and assist in universities.

—  pursue graduate studies in Mathematics and related fields of study.

—  set up Mathematical models, formulate algorithm and implement them using numerical methods.

—  assist and  participate in conducting research.

—  reason logically and think critically.

—  demonstrate environmental, social, cultural and political awareness.

—   act in an ethical manner, recognize and be guided by social, professional and ethical issues involved in his/her career in particular and in the community in general  exercise the power of self expression

3. Admission Requirements

Besides the successfully completion of the preparatory program, a student should meet university admission policy. Diploma holders can apply for admission as per the regulation of the University for advanced standing.

4. Duration of Study

The duration of the study takes 6 semester or three years.

5. Mode of delivery

The main teaching-learning methods employed in the curriculum include: Conducting lecture based on active participation of students; Tutorial classes where students will discuss and solve problems; Discussion and presentation in group; Reading assignment; Practical work (computer Lab.); Project work; Modeling of practical problems; Class activities.

6. Mode of Assessment

Some of the assessment methods are Assignments; Quizzes; Project; presentation; Tests and final examinations; Class activities.

7. Grading System

The grading system grading point of the program will be taken as per the legislation of the University.

The graduation requirement of the program will be taken as per the legislation of the University and the total ETCTS required for graduation with the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Mathematics is indicated below.

9. Degree Nomenclature

10. Course Coding

The national harmonization team forms the following clustering of courses to develop modules based on sequence, level of difficulty and their competency. Naming and coding of courses and modules is given as follows:
