Message from the Department Head

Dear Reader,

First of all I would like to express my heart full appreciation to all of Water Resource and Irrigation Engineering department societies. Next to that, training qualified  professionals  on  different  disciplines  are  inevitable  for  the  overall  development  of  the country  in  such  a  way  that  problems  related to the water resources potential, critical shortage of serious water-related disease in the country can  easily  be  solved. Therefore, the development of water resources must be a central element of the country’s strategy to improve the quality of life of the people.

The demand for the program is expected to increase in the future. As students start to appreciate the importance of Water Resources Engineering in solving real problems of the country, more and more students will be attracted to the program. The demand for water resources engineers is huge in the country. For instance, the Ministry of Water Resources, with an effective involvement of regions and due participation of various stakeholders. Moreover, there are also a number of job opportunities in other public and private sectors as well as in non-governmental organizations for qualified water resources engineers.
Therefore, since, the program was planned to fulfill the required number and quality of human resources needed; our rolls and efforts are very important for the successiveness of pointed missions.

Lastly, I would like to alert you that everything is possible, if our cooperation, integrity, honesty and fairness are present. Let solve of water resource problems by having qualified professionals and Engineers. Wishing you all the best in your daily teaching and learning endeavors.

Program Description

The Water Resources and Irrigation Engineering (WRIE) program is one of the undergraduate degree programs offered in the Institute of Technology of Madda Walabu University. The opening of the program is in tandem with the country’s efforts towards developing its water resources in a sustainable way. The importance and need for planned development of water resources of Ethiopia can hardly be overemphasized.

At Madda Walabu University, the program was started at 2003 E.C. with a few numbers of staffs. However, the department now a day has many staff members which comprised from multi professionals as well as specialization.

      Vision

Water  Resources  and  Irrigation  Engineering  program  aspires  to  produce  qualified  and  internationally competent professionals in the areas of water resources development and management.

Mission

Water Resources and Irrigation engineering program has the following missions:

Producing  competent  and  innovative  engineers  in  the  area  of  water  sector  by  offering  quality education and training services.

Conducting demand driven and problem solving researches in WRIE area.

Rendering community and consultancy service in order to contribute to the development endeavors of the country by developing its water resource.

 Structure of the Curriculum

This curriculum was designed in pursuance of directions given from the Ministry of Education in order to solve problems observed in the existing higher education curriculum and with an objective of developing improved curricula aimed at providing practical oriented and measurable education in terms of the output as per the engineering program reform in Water Resources and Irrigation Engineering discipline. The five years harmonized with 5 universities (Arba Minch, Hawasa, Aksum Haromaya and Madda Walabu) curriculum here attached.

The Water Resources and Irrigation Engineering program needs to be equipped with, apart from classrooms, staff offices, administrative units and other necessary facilities. However, the staffs currently available in the department are:
