The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is one of the departments in the College of Engineering, Institute of Technology in Madda Walabu University. The department plays an important role in the development of the Energy, communication, computer, industrial and commercial sectors of country.

 Our students would able to find solutions to new complex and challenging technical problem and they must have strong scientific, technical and managerial skills and be able to integrate technical concepts with practical applications.

 Therefore, to pursue its vision and mission, to meet objectives and to bring quality of education, the department feels that much is expected from it, and strives to fast response to the needs of the national economy in this particular field.  

 v  Short History of the Department

 Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Madda Walabu University, was established in the year 2006 E.C. with 10 staff members and one program, five years Undergraduate Degree Program in Electrical and Computer Engineering. But, now a day the department has twenty five (25) staff members (including Ethiopian and Expatriate instructors) and three (3) lab assistants, and started extension program.

v  Vision of the Department

 The ECE Department aspires to excel in teaching, research, and industry linkage/consultancy at international, national as well as regional level and also in producing competent engineers within the field of electrical power, electronics, communication systems, control and computer engineering to solve the problem of our country and bring about growth.

 v  Mission of the Department

 The mission of the department is to:

Ø  produce well-balanced engineers with up-to-date engineering knowledge & skills, and high aspirations to excellence, poverty alleviation and leadership;

Ø  conduct and foster creative research by addressing the needs of industry, government and the scientific community;

Ø   develop a linkage between the industry and the department;

Ø   Publicize its achievements through enduring publications and via conference participations. 

v Summary of the Curriculum Structure

 

The Electrical and Computer Engineering curriculum focuses on broad-based training to provide flexibility of career choices and focused training to provide competence in particular electrical engineering profession. It finds balance between breadth and depth to provide a solid foundation in the basic engineering, mathematics, electrical engineering on one hand, and comprehensive training in humanities and management on the other.

 

The assessment semester is intended to consolidate the students' educational background for higher learning and further help them to adapt to the system.

In the five consecutive semesters, after the common pre-engineering semester, all the students take courses mainly in the core electrical engineering module. This provides them with a broad background for all areas of electrical and computer engineering. At the end of the sixth semester, the students are expected to pass a holistic examination that requires an overview of all the courses taken to make sure that they are ready for the focus area studies of electrical and computer engineering.

 

In the final two years, students are given the opportunity to focus on one of the four areas, namely communication engineering, electrical power engineering, computer and control engineering.
