UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM

                                                              i.      RATIONALE OF THE PROGRAM

English Language is among the few languages used internationally as a medium of communication and all forms of interaction (economic, social, business, political, etc) between nations across countries and continents. Its teaching at all levels in countries like Ethiopia becomes inevitable to produce citizens capable of working at global level to aid the development of the country in every affair.

The Department of English Language and Literature works towards achieving the mission of the country at large and university in particular by producing qualified graduates with the required competence. The programme includes the modules and courses designed to provide competence based training. During their stay in the department the   students should have adequate training and practice in the subject matter to be competent in the modern job world. Among others the students will learn to be good communicators in English language. They will be equipped with the knowledge of the principles that guide the scientific study of language. In addition, they practise different levels of writing, reading, listening, and speaking skills in English. The candidates yet get  the opportunity to engage in oral communication in a variety of situations and develop the oral communication skills necessary to be able to transfer the required  skills  in the their job world after graduation. They also develop analytic skills to understand literary texts. They will also acquire research skills so as to solve problems pertaining to English Language learning and teaching.

In general, the candidates must have full mastery of the target language so that they have the competence and confidence to use the language for various purposes. The curriculum is designed focusing on the competencies the graduates need to attain by integrating English Language knowledge and skills, and aspires to effectively prepare professionals for diverse job opportunities in the areas where the country needs skilled professionals. There is a great need for English Language specialists in various areas such as public relations, communications, interpretations, etc.

                                                            ii.      PROGRAM OBJECTIVES           

General Objective

The general objective of the program is to train English Language professionals for various competencies and occupational purposes;
Specific Objectives

The program has the following specific objectives:

Ø  to equip students with basic English language skills and knowledge needed for a various purposes;

Ø  to equip students with knowledge of how human language functions or the scientific study of language;

Ø  to enable students appreciate and criticize literary works;

Ø  to enable students to conduct research in their field of study;

Ø  to equip students with communication and public relation skills as well as media use;

Ø  to enable students translate and interpret various discourses.

                                                              i.      PROFESSIONAL PROFILES 

The program aspires to produce graduates who can give professional services to governmental and non-governmental organizations, private companies and different institutions. More specifically:

*      perform public relations and related activities;

*      write various types of reports ( e.g., brochures, annual reports, magazines, work and performance evaluation reports etc.);

*      write discourses of science and technology (e.g., preparing manuals, guidelines, teaching materials etc.);

*      Translate scientific and literary works)

*      Edit various documents;

*      Manage media and related activities;

*      Do research and report in language related areas;

*      Prepare memos, minutes and business communication activities;

*      Become languages analyst

*      Promote socio-cultural and linguistic elements of a language;

*      Make reviews of various texts;

*      Criticize literary works.          

                                                            ii.      GRADUATE PROFILE     

On completion of the program, graduates would have the following competences and can:
 

*        Use English with high level of accuracy and fluency in (listening, speaking, reading, and writing);

*        Make critical analysis of English language texts and discourse;

*        Prepare seminars, forums and facilitate discussions and meetings in English;

*        Use appropriate English for business communications (writing memos, letters, minutes, reports, presentations, notices etc.);

*        Interpret discourses and translate from and into the English language;

*        Write, edit, and review various texts;

*        Conduct a professional and critical analysis of literary works;

*        Conduct research;

*        Facilitate and run public relations.

V.  PROGRAM PROFILES

            a) Admission Requirement: Entry to the department would require:
 

Ø  a successful completion of the preparatory program;

Ø   a satisfactory result in the higher education entrance examination;

Ø   a good background of English language;

Ø   a CGPA of 2.00 and above in the diploma program for advanced standing students from any recognized institution; and

Ø   Satisfying the general admission requirements of the university.

b)     Duration of Study

      Successful completion of the program would require three years of study or six semesters.

c)      Teaching/Learning Methods and Mode of Delivery

The mode of learning will be student centered, participatory and reflective. Students need to work individually, in pairs, and in groups and make presentations, reports and whole class discussion. The instructor designs meaningful tasks and monitor the ongoing learning process. Besides, he/she has a facilitating role during pair, group or/and whole class discussion. But as the regulation for modularization advises, independent learning is encouraged in the delivery of all the courses in the modules. Modules and courses in the program are delivered both on semester basis and through blocking. Few courses (common courses: Communicative English, Basic Writing Skills, ICT and Student Research project) will be offered on semester basis due to the nature of the courses and the remaining other modules (courses) will be delivered on block basis.

d)     Assessments and Evaluation Mechanisms

Students will be assessed both on continuous and final examination basis. The continuous assessment will be through portfolio writing, classroom presentation, quiz, written assignments, speech delivery, etc. Generally, continuous assessment covers 50% to 60% of the evaluation; whereas final exam covers 40% to 50%.

e)      Graduation Requirements

To graduate in English Language and Literature, a candidate should have:
 
Ø  a minimum overall CGPA of 2.00;

Ø  no “ F” grade in any of the courses / module

Ø  a total of 180 ECTS
